ABSTRACT

Shanghai, September 25, 2025 – Hosted by the National Innovation Center Par Excellence (NICE) and co-organized by the Shanghai United Center for Electrophysiology and Rehabilitation Innovation (NCC Neuro Research Center), the Midterm Review of the “AI-Based Automated Interpretation of Evoked Potential (EP) Waveforms in Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM)” Program, together with the Launch Ceremony of the “Challenge-Driven” Project, was held at the NICE Building in Shanghai. The event brought together clinicians, researchers, and industry leaders to drive the intelligent advancement of IONM in China.

Smart Upgrade: AI-Assisted Analysis Marks a Milestone

To date, the project has collected and annotated more than 2,700 high-quality clinical cases. The AI model has demonstrated strong accuracy and stability in identifying key waveforms, including Evoked Potentials (EP) and Electromyography (EMG), laying a solid foundation for automated and objective intraoperative neurophysiological assessment.

This milestone represents a significant step forward in intelligent intraoperative neurophysiology and highlights the potential of this technology to enhance surgical safety and efficiency in the future.

Frontier Focus: Launch of the “Sensory Discrimination” Challenge Project

At the event, the “Challenge-Driven” project, “Research on Visualized Decision-Support Technology for Differential Sensory Function Monitoring,” was officially launched. Spearheaded by NCC Medical, the project was jointly undertaken by Prof. Shi-Ting Li’s neurosurgery team from Shanghai Xin Hua Hospital and other renowned neurosurgical experts.

“Sensory discrimination” remains one of the core challenges in neuromonitoring: accurately differentiating intraoperative signals of pain, touch, temperature, and proprioception. The ability to distinguish these modalities is critical for assessing nerve injury, guiding surgical maneuvers, and minimizing postoperative complications.

By integrating multi-modal signal acquisition with advanced AI algorithms, the project aims to build a visualized decision-support system. It represents a transformative leap—from monitoring motor function to perceiving sensory function—and positions Chinese clinical teams to move from keeping pace with global standards to leading the field.

Clinical Implementation: “NeuGuard” Ensures Full-Cycle Support

To support the effective adoption of IONM across clinical institutions, NCC Medical collaborates with the NeuGuard Clinical Support Team to provide comprehensive services to partner hospitals:

Tiered Training: From basic operation to advanced parameter configuration

On-Site Support: On-call engineers for high-risk or complex procedures

Remote Collaboration Platform: Cross-institutional case sharing and expert consultations

Joint Research Programs: Co-building real-world databases to support evidence-based studies

This operational model has been piloted in multiple hospitals nationwide, significantly improving clinical teams’ understanding and application of neuromonitoring systems.
